Making sound financial decisions is one of the most important aspects of our spiritual life, but it can be difficult to know what to do when there are so many voices competing for our attention. So I’ve compiled a few questions that will help align you with God’s will when faced with a difficult financial decision. These are in direct opposition to what most financial advisors (and your flesh) will tell you to do, but we live in God’s economy and He promises to remove all financial pain when we do money His way.
1. Is there any doubt in my mind about purchasing it?
“But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.” – Romans 14:23
2. Did I give God an opportunity to supply it?
“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” – Phil. 4:19
3. Will it help my spiritual growth or hinder it?
“You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is good for you. And even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything.” – 1 Corinthians 6:12
4. Will it put me in debt?
“Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.” – Proverbs 22:7
5. Does it make sense as an eternal investment?
“I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” – Luke 16:9
6. Does it contribute to oppression?
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” – Proverbs 31:8-9
7. Why do I want it?
“People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.” – 1 Tim. 6:9
8. Do I really need it?
“So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.” – 1 Tim 6:8
