Save a $1,000 Day 20: Just DIY It!

Some projects are better left to professionals

In the age of YouTube, DIY blogs, and yes, the Grandmother of them all, Pinterest, you can figure out how to make just about everything yourself. My wife spends countless hours on Pinterest learning how to make everything from homemade dryer sheets to DIY baby diapers.

We have no baby, but she loves to chime in on a conversation and say, “Oh! You can make those yourself! It’s easy!”

Many DIY projects are much easier than they seem and you’ll learn some new skills in the process. Before every purchase, stop and ask yourself if you can make the item instead.

Do make sure to factor in the amount of time it would cost you to make the item since it is sometimes cheaper in the long run to buy an item than to spend excessive time making it yourself.

Potential Monthly Savings: $20 – $200 (depends on the project)
